The most awarded female rapper of all time.

Lauryn Hill rose to fame as a member of one of hip hops most successful alternative rap groups of the 90’s…..THE FUGEES!

Ms. Hill (as she prefers to be addressed) is a rapper, singer, songwriter, producer and an actress. In 1993, she appeared in the film Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit with Whoopi Goldberg. Shortly after her theatrical debut, The Fugees first album, “Blunted in Reality” was released on February 1, 1994. However, it was the Fugees second and final release, in 1996, “The Score” that made it clear, Ms. Hill could have a successful solo career in music. The songs that featured Hill were some of the most popular tracks on the album and it was these songs “Fu-Gee-La” “Ready or Not” and “Killing Me Softly” that sealed their worldwide fame. Lauryn Hill was emerging as a star and fans could not wait for her solo release.

“The Score racked up many high-profile awards to include a Grammy for “Best Rap Album”. The album was also ranked as number 134 in Rolling Stone Magazines list of the “Top 500 Albums of All-Time”. Killing Me Softly also won a Grammy for “Best R&B Performance by a Group or Duo with Vocals”. As the awards kept stacking up it was paving the way for a GIGANTIC debut release for Lauryn Hill.

On August 25, 1998 the wait was over and “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” was released. Before release of the album, she was romantically linked to Bob Marley’s son, Rohan Marley. Through Rohan she became more entrenched in the country and the Reggae music of Jamaica. Her album consisted of hip hop, neo-soul and reggae.

Upon release, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill shot to the top of the charts at number 1. First week sales were huge for Ms. Hill with over 400,000 sold. She is the most awarded female rapper of all time.  Ms. Hill is the first female rapper to win the Grammy for “Best New Artist”, “Best Rap Album” and “Album of the Year”. At the 41st Grammy Awards in 1999, she broke the record for most awards won by a solo artist at one ceremony. Lauryn Hill has had over 166 nominations during her career in music and she has won over 100 awards.

As a buyer for a major chain of music stores, I have received many Gold and Platinum awards for our contribution to an artist or labels’ sales. My platinum award for “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” is one of my favorite plaques. It was exciting doing instore autograph signings with her at the height of her career. Her epic debut release, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” was certified as a “Diamond” release for sales in excess of 10 million copies on February 17, 2021.

Ms. Hill is only the 4th black female artist to achieve Diamond sales status.
